CANINE PARVOVIRUS INFECTION
The incubation period for CPV usually lasts four to six days, however it has been reported for periods up to 14 days. When early and aggressive support care is instituted the survival rate can be as high as 80%; however this does mean days in intensive care with periods of time where it may appear that no progress is being made. With an 80% survival rate also comes a 20% mortality rate, and this prognosis will worsen when treatment starts later in the process of the disease. Outbreaks are notoriously difficult to control because the virus is highly resistant to regular cleaning methods and can survive more than six months in an environment. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting and lethargy.
